Preah Vihear, Mountain of the Sacred Monastery

Hindu temple from the 9th century, Preah Vihear is dedicated to Shiva. Located 200 km North of Siem Reap, near the border between Thailand and Cambodia, this temple is unique, because it is constructed on a 800 m. North-South axis, instead of the usual rectangular plan facing East, it is made up of a series of sanctuaries connecting by long avenues and causeways.
Located at the top of a mountain, Preah Vihear, overlooking a vast plain and mountain range, allows an amazing view finally acknowledged because it has just been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site like Angkor Wat in 1992

Preah Vihear, the most spectacular location
of any Khmer site

Besides a panoramic view at the top of the Dangrek mountain, this temple dedicated to Shiva « the supreme being of the mountain », is particularly well-preserved, we can see five beautiful gopuras (the gopura from the third level is elaborately decorated) et several nagas

Preah Vihear, A contentious issue between Thailand and Cambodia

Thailand always protested against a decision of the International Court of Justice in the Hague which gave the ownership of the Preah Vihear Temple to Cambodia in 1962. Tensions have been high since the temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2008. Due to this situation, the temple is closed to visitors now, until the end of bilateral negociations
